P&A Welcomes New Faculty Member Chakraborty
Starting this August, Dr. Tonmoy Chakraborty will join the Department of Physics and Astronomy as an assistant professor.
Tonmoy comes to UNM from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where he was doing his postdoctoral work since March 2018.
Tonmoy received his BSc. in Physics from University of Calcutta and MS in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. While working in the semiconductor industry for few years, he joined the Physics program at State University of New York, Albany to finish his dissertation work in the field of computational phase imaging.
He is interested in the development of new imaging platforms for biomedical applications, especially using light-sheet based techniques. As we know, tissues are composed of multiple cell types organized in a complex three-dimensional architecture. However, because of the limited penetration depth of visible photons, observing the molecular and structural composition of intact tissues remains challenging. His research in developing these microscopes extend the spatiotemporal resolution of biomedical imaging by harnessing the synergy between physics, biology, computer-science and engineering.
Tonmoy is from Calcutta (now Kolkata) India and loves reading and discussing about its rich heritage. He enjoys hiking/camping with his family and cooking authentic Bengali dishes.
