What astronomers thought was just the galaxy UGC 10288 actually is two galaxies superimposed on each other. The nearer one is 100 million light-years from Earth, while the distant one is some 7 billion light-years away.

Surprising image provides new tool for studying a galaxy
November 14, 2013: Astronomy magazine article features a team at the Very Large Array, including UNM astronomer Richard Rand, which found an unusual alignment in a galaxy, which will allow us to learn otherwise unobtainable facts.
